Tired of the stereotypical hotel lobbies? Looking for a different type of accommodation on your next trip to Stockholm?

On my travels to Stockholm last week, I had the pleasure of staying at Prince van Orangiën. The place is not just any hotel, it is actually a floating one … For a limited time only (until March 31, but probably back during a few months every winter), the boat is moored at Strandvägen, right in the middle of town.

Your hosts are Agneta Green and Magnus Ek, more known for owning and running Oaxen Krog, a restaurant located in the Stockholm archipelago and named as one of the world’s 50 best restaurants of 2009. This busy couple chose to shut down the Oaxen for a few winter months every year, and it is during this time that they become temporary hoteliers.

A few years ago, Prince van Orangiën was purchased in Holland, where it had served as a private home. It consists of seven cabins, all meticulously restored to its former glory with interiors constructed with oak, ebony, rosewood, slate and marble. To add to the glamour, a beautiful chandelier hangs above the staircase.

I had the privilege of staying in the Chief Mate’s Cabin, with a majestic view of parts of Stockholm’s harbor. The beds were utterly comfortable (Carpe Diem) bathrooms were stocked with Byredo (my favorite because of the fresh scent) cosmetics. Breakfast was served in the lounge, and I was spoiled rotten with freshly squeezed orange juice, home-made granola, great bread and fresh fruit salad – better than any other hotel breakfast in a long time! I hope to be back soon, and can’t wait to get a chance to visit Oaxen in the near future.
